Associate And Bachelors Admissions

Associate And Bachelor's Admissions And perhaps because it was my decision to read this epic, my reaction to it was stronger than it otherwise would have been. Until then, being Polish meant little more to me than having a second passport, wearing a traditional dress on holidays, and having a passel of cousins across the ocean. Being Polish was a part of me, but not something I paid much attention to. Self-confidence is something I have struggled very long and hard with. I used to worry that I would stand outâ€"especially in school. The obsession with following narrow dreams that I see in my peers is part of today’s conformism. The drive to conform to a standard so as to avoid standing out has become more and more apparent. However, the society depicted in the novel accepts such conformism to urvive, whereas the young generation can take individual freedom for granted. It impedes creativity and critical thinking, but these are essential in raising questions and seeing beyond the obvious. Avoiding conformism and pre-set structures lets people see the world in different colors and leads to self-discovery. This novel is a clear reminder that people have potential and must not choose an easy path in life. Each individual must pave their own way to achieve true happiness. The novel also addresses conformism and its effects on society. Moreover, he has taught me to stand my ground and be perceptive. The critical viewpoint I have grown into has trained me not to take things for granted and to be inquisitive. The poem’s lyrical Alexandrines transported me back to Poland, especially when the words were softly murmured, huddled underneath blankets, the pages illuminated with a flickering flashlight. I first began reading Pan Tadeusz when I was thirteen. So, in a way, The Master and Margarita has helped me to understand my father and appreciate him as an outsider, an individualist. I have also become an individualist who tries to defy the conformism around him. I live in a newly independent society that still has remnants of the old, Soviet conformism, and, instead of freeing itself, it has begun to bury itself in it. Instead, my peers choose to follow similar paths of education and career . At an early age they are asked to choose their path for life. The views of my society are rather one dimensional towards being different. When reflecting that becoming part of this society would lead me to self-hatred, I have come to see Master as an example. The hardship he undergoes and the courage he portrays afterwards have inspired me to embrace who I am. He has always encouraged me to have my own personal outlook and opinion. I think he believes that conformity undermines intellectual potentialâ€"an opinion I now strongly agree with. Documents meant the difference between life and death in Stalin’s regime. This harsh reality that I saw in the novel impressed me. It has made me notice links between the story and my generation. The description of art under the regime is one of my favorite aspects of the novel. The artists’ association, MASSOLIT, depicts how artists operated in the Soviet Union. The conformism in the novel is blindly following government orders, not questioning the comical levels of commodity deficits, the lack of freedom of speech, and restrictions on art. The quote from the introduction shows an even bigger tragedy. The words “no documents, no person” are spoken by Woland’s right-hand, Koroviev, to Master when he is rescued. Master immediately worries that he will be in trouble if someone finds him with paper proof that he is “sick”.

Examples Of Personal Statements For Graduate School In Counseling

Examples Of Personal Statements For Graduate School In Counseling Instead, the characters within its pages are mixtures of everything and its opposite. The story’s protagonist, Liesel Meminger, learns this lesson through her experiences in Nazi Germany, a place and time in which we are often inclined to believe that good and evil existed as separate entities. This epic is not only a great bookâ€"it is the great book of Poland, as important and symbolic as the Vistula River that flows from the Polish mountains to the Baltic sea. Constitution, Poles are required to memorize sections of Pan Tadeusz, especially those which are thought to embody the core of what it means to be Polish. A Pole reciting the opening of Pan Tadeusz is like an American reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Its author, Adam Mickiewicz, is considered something of a literary god, somewhere between Dante and Shakespeare. Self-confidence is something I have struggled very long and hard with. I used to worry that I would stand outâ€"especially in school. I can’t look at it without a wave of nausea and fascination crashing over me. If you flip through the book now, you can see the pages I gripped so tightly that they tore. After reading Lolita, my brother and I spent the following days dissecting every minute detail, trying to find some kind of understanding of Lolita. We searched together for insight, sat up late after dinner arguing about whether or not Humbert loved Dolores, and what the final meeting between Humbert and Dolores meant. My experience of Lolita is intrinsically connected to the discussions I had with my brother. Moreover, he has taught me to stand my ground and be perceptive. The critical viewpoint I have grown into has trained me not to take things for granted and to be inquisitive. So, in a way, The Master and Margarita has helped me to understand my father and appreciate him as an outsider, an individualist. I have also become an individualist who tries to defy the conformism around him. Until recently, I felt little obligation to involve myself in any substantive way with humanity as a whole. Before I had defined this connection as one of my most important values, I experimented with various methods of separation. In bursts of inspiration I would “homeschool” myself, withdrawing into seclusion. Lolita inspired in me a fervent hunger for discussion of truth. By the time high school rolled around, that girl was nowhere to be found. After years and years of being told what to think and the “right” questions to ask, I had retreated into intellectual paralysis. I would uncomprehendingly coast through my classes, molding my knowledge to fit the next quiz and promptly forgetting it afterwards. School didn’t require, and at times, actively discouraged my insatiable desire to figure out the puzzles of the world, so I shoved that side of myself away and forgot that it even existed. This sense of clarity I received, was due in part to Pride and Prejudice because even though it did not provide me with the answers to my questions, it had given me a sense of self awareness. The notion that prejudice clouds perception was a truth that I don’t imagine I’d have come to as early without the help of Austen and it made me wonder how much more I could learn from reading. After that I became obsessed with reading, falling into my old habits of staying up late to read the last chapter, staying in to read at lunch, and going to the library every weekend. I am forever grateful to Pride and Prejudice for reigniting the passion for reading I had lost in middle school. The move to Texas was one of the hardest transitions in my life as I was greeted with a culture shock and had to reinvent myself. The Book Thief introduces a myriad cast of characters and thrusts them into the polarizing world of Nazi Germany. Not one of the book’s characters can be defined in terms of “good” and “evil,” or “right” and “wrong.” Rather, they are all unequivocally human, for better or for worse. The one absolute truth to our existence is the divide between life and deathâ€"and, some may argue that death is the only cessation of our humanity. In California my peers and I had shared the same views. We were all so liberal which at the time felt like a blessing, but when I got to Texas it seemed as though everywhere I went my ideas were challenged. On an almost daily basis I was asked to defend my views on a subject, but my debating skills were limited to logical fallacies and ad hominem attacks so I wasn’t too successful. In my eyes it didn’t matter what I said because I was right and they were wrong. The Book Thief refuses to flee from this ambiguity.

How To Write A Great College Application Essay

How To Write A Great College Application Essay He refers to this moment as “t zero,” where t is time, and the moment he is experiencing is point zero. Although staying at t zero is appealing, upon the end of the story the hunter must inevitably move through time into the next second where his fate will be decided. Unlike other colleges with special course requirements, unstable administration, and strange traditional customs such as Freshman not being able to say the word ‘duck’, I found complete and absolute nothing. I signed up for more information; they stayed true to the image and personality of the college. I visited the Santa Fe campus and experienced classes, the campus, and the people. Surprisingly enough I made friends within 20 minutes of being on campus. This short story is about a hunter, Qfwfq, who has just fired an arrow at a lion. The lion leaps at the hunter, and in that second the hunter can’t tell if the arrow will miss or not. He has a 50/50 chance of killing the lion or being killed by the lion. The hunter then considers the possibility of remaining frozen in time in this moment of uncertainty forever, where every possible outcome could still happen, but hasn’t happened yet. The hunter spends the rest of the story thinking through all the possible ramifications that come with choosing to exist only within a single second. My favorite protagonist and I grew up together until I moved on from the third grade, finally outgrowing that special connection. But reading the Junie B. Jones books taught me to connect in different ways with other texts. I knew what to look for, what it felt like, and I desired to find that connection in other places. Junie opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, and saved my dad a neck cramp from sleeping at a weird angle. However, through my entire high school life, I was not allowed to have a conversation in classes. When my mom handed me Cosmicomicsin New York and said that I might like it, I was pretty skeptical. I am reluctant to fall in love with book someone recommends. But once I started it, I realized that I couldn’t help falling for it. Each one starts with a quote, which Calvino uses to explain and explore complex scientific theories. For example, he takes the reader through the creation of the universe, mitosis and meiosis, theories about space and time, dinosaurs, the moon, and many more. When I was six, we moved, and a box of my books turned up in my new room. I collected the series, and when I finished with the ones I had, I reread them and begged for more. Before the series, I had no real interest in books. I loved stories, and I liked scribbling on pages and pretending to write books, but turning the pages of other people’s words never caught my attention. This double life that I live now is so different from what it was in the beginning, when I was a normal kindergartner, just like the heroine. It wasn’t like reading Plato, or studying Mark Twain, where I feel cultured and empowered, adventurous and brave. The complex tapestries he weaves are hauntingly beautiful, sharing only a common narrator, the ageless Qfwfq, who relays each story as though having witnessed it. In my pursuit to find a catch, I could only find nothing. Before the B, as in Beatrice, I was content to have my dad read to me until he fell asleep. I was in Kindergarten when I got my first Junie B. Jones book. I couldn’t read it by myself yet, and my dad was in the middle of the first Harry Potter book, so the pick checkered cover was put on a shelf. Being quiet was the unspoken rule of manner and etiquette, where the dominance of the teacher to teach and submission of student to learn by observation was naturally accepted by all members of every class. Not only that, for me, saying aloud my ideas helps me to better understand and clarify my thoughts, and thus myself. For example, the piece “t zero” is one of my favorites.

Do Admissions Officers Know If A College Essay Is Fake?

Do Admissions Officers Know If A College Essay Is Fake? What I’ve realized though, is that I don’t have to sacrifice all for one. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge I’ve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond “potatoes! Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically they’re the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I don’t have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I can’t do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I don’t know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another person’s outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I don’t necessarily have to find validity in everyone’s viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasn’t going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. I don’t feel I’ve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions.

Your Magic Formula For The College Application Essay

Your Magic Formula For The College Application Essay EduBirdie uses top quality writers with years of higher-level writing experience on a variety of subjects. On average for a five-paragraph essay, I write around 1, words. For an eight paragraph essay, I write around 2,000-2,600 words on the document. Keep in mind your quotes too, you should have one quote per paragraph or two . It really is up to the person though, I have a buddy who writes considerably less than I do, but is able to get his point across. It has additional sections to add more information, such as an extended background or an approach/methods section. Narrative essays are often the closest thing to pieces of journalism. If you master the narrative essay, then you are likely well on your way to being a successful journalist. How likely is that I will get into a school like Harvard? I have As and some high Bs in all of my classes I have over 100 hours of community service, a leadership role in a club, play varsity sports, and I did well on my PSATs (I haven't received my SAT scores yet). Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, it’s fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section. There is no firm rule that says an essay needs to have a set number of paragraphs, but an essay must be a minimum of three paragraphs. There are a lot of people who say an essay should be five paragraphs, but it’s an extremely limiting rule, and unless you’ve been instructed to write a five paragraph essay, there’s no reason to stick to it. This master template can be used for short argumentative essays, long argumentative essays, complicated argumentative essays, and straightforward ones. Assuming five psychological effects have been identified, you can assume you’ll need to write five paragraphs if you are going to write a relatively in-depth essay. For example, if you are writing an essay on childhood development and exposure to technology, you will want to look into the physical, psychological and cognitive developmental effects of tech on kids. When you research this topic, you will find that there are contrasting points of view and researchers have identified several physical, developmental, and psychological effects of technology use in children. In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. As we said, writing is hard, and even professional writers like myself have trouble doing it. Here are a few useful tips that I follow in order to get the most of myself. Some key requirements for writing a good essay are ensuring a logical flow of content and smooth transitions but also using compelling evidence taken from trustworthy sources. A lot depends on how captivating/ original your information is, so focusing on content quality is crucial. I was raised in Bengalu and when I was 18 I moved to Hong Kong to take my university study. Last year I went to London to join the school's exchange program. During my exchange I went backpacking with other backpackers from all over the world to other countries across Europe. Ultimately, your essay will be evaluated on the information you present, not on the number of paragraphs in the essay. Early in your academic life, teachers and lecturers may give you both a structure for your essay and a guideline on how long each part of the essay should be. After all, if the teacher is allocating 80 marks for content in total and you can see 50% of the mark relates to a certain part of the essay, then 50% of your essay’s words should be devoted to that section. I think I have been fortunate enough to be able to live in different parts of the world and thus be able to broaden my horizon. About my achievements, I never made any achievements at state level. But in my schooling I got certificate in singing level competition. In college I got NSS certificate which I participated as volunteer in my 1st year of engineering. If you are really for some reason writing a 100 word essay, then you should have one short sentence for both your introduction and conclusion. Paragraphs structure information into sub-topics, and they make your work easier to read and understand thanks to the structure they provide. With careful advance planning, you’ll be able to work out more or less how many paragraphs you need to complete your essay. Also my financial background is that of lower income. i referred this all things about how to attend interview for job purpose this is very useful to all the post graduate as well as under graduate students and also me. I am currently studying Finance and Economics at Hong Kong University. What you’re taught is often a general rule to shoot for, not a rule set in concrete. Your teacher felt that 7 paragraphs was a good number for the essays you wrote for her, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. My teachers always taught by eight paragraph essays, but five-paragraph essays normally lie precedent to the more advanced or larger essays. the general rule is that 3 paragraphs are minimum for an essay. So, no matter how short your essay is, you should still need 3 paragraphs.

Its High Time We Killed The College Admissions Essay

It’s High Time We Killed The College Admissions Essay But then, I sat in on a debate team practice and was instantly hooked. I was captivated by how confidently the debaters spoke and how easily they commanded attention. I was sick of how confining my quiet nature had become. For better or for worse, I decided to finally make my voice heard. A narrowly focused essay will be much more effective than a general, vague one. Whatever you feel you can contribute, add that to your list of essay goals. Again, remember that you are more than just an international student. You have so much more to contribute to the campus social and learning environment than just your home culture. Take a few moments to consider what else you may contribute. My statistical training in psychology orientates me toward a more quantitative graduate experience. Due to the University of Rochester’s reputation for an extensive use of statistics in political science research, I would make a good addition to your fall class. In discussions, I put forward my ideas with every bit as much conviction as my classmates. When seniors began to ask me for advice and teachers recruited me to teach underclassmen, I discovered not only that I had been heard, but that others wanted to listen. At heart, I am still reserved , but in finding my voice, I found a strength I could only dream of when I stood in silence so many years ago. Scanning the school club packet, I searched for my place. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I joined no clubs in primary school, instead preferring isolation. It took six years of tongue twisters and complicated mouth contortions in special education classes for me to produce the forty-four sounds of the English language. With this in mind, you should replace lower-level words with higher-level words . You might consider looking up SAT/ACT vocabulary words and working a handful of those into your essay. The Trick To Writing Admission Essays

The Trick To Writing Admission Essays The purpose of the admissions essay is to convey a sense of your unique character to the admissions committee. The essay also demonstrates your writing skills as well as your ability to organize your thoughts coherently. DON’T try to sound “academic” or give the “what they want to hear.” DO write what only you can write. (“I am… I was… I have been…”) DO use active, interesting details. DON’T just talk about why the school is a good fit for you. Colleges are not looking for the next Ernest Hemingway or Toni Morrison. You will sound smart when you use your own words and your own voice to tell a genuine story that shows who you are. The more you enjoy your subject matter the easier it will be to write the essay. Come back the next day with a fresh eye and go over it. You will be able to streamline your line of thought that way so you can fit into word counts. I read and review essays for a living and my students tell me the insight is invaluable. DO make sure that your own personality shines through. Colleges look at the personality of each student as well as their qualifications. DO talk about what you plan to contribute to the school, and why you are the perfect candidate for it! DON’T send it off without having someone else read it first! There aren’t too many things you can do to ensure rejection, but plagiarism, also known as cheating, is one of them. If you use a thesaurus to find words rather than trust the words you know and use every day, you will not sound like yourself. What’s more, you might use a few big words incorrectly, which will never impress an admissions officer. The essay is an opportunity to impress an admissions team that may be on the fence regarding your application. While much of the application review process is automated, the essay is an opportunity for students to be evaluated on their creativity and personal experiences. Mitch Warren, the director of admissions at Purdue University, drives this point home. While many students stress over their essays, it's important to remember that this is just one component of the admissions process, and rarely the decisive factor. 2) Make sure you know what you want the college to know about you before you decide what story to tell. Read the prompt before, during and after you write your draft, then ask someone else to tell you whether or not you responded to it. This mistake shows that you don’t care enough to proofread your application. Admissions committees might forgive a typo, but they don’t like to hear that you wish you were going to school somewhere else. This is your chance to show them who you are, not just what you’ve done! Don’t be afraid to ask for help on wording and style either, just make sure that your voice is always the one being heard, not your proofreader’s. Colleges can tell when you weren’t thinking about them specifically as you wrote your essay and were just casting a really wide net. Especially if you put the wrong colleges name on the essay! DON’T use too many exclamation points- you want to seem passionate about something, but exclamation points are informal, and too many can seem overly frivolous. That doesn't mean that the essay is unimportant; it does give you an opportunity to directly make your case to the admissions committee. Just keep a healthy perspective on its relative importance as you write. Essays are used to learn more about your reasons for applying to the course, university or company and your ability to benefit from and contribute to it. Your answers will let you state your case more fully than other sections of the application, and provide the evaluator with better insight about you and how you differ from the other applicants. In marginal cases, the essays are used to decide whether an applicant will be selected. Do tell a great story that communicates some unique qualities you offer a college. Do tell a specific story that grabs the reader’s attention. Don’t focus on a negative event or a struggle without spending more time on what you learned or gain from it? Don’t write about a person without spending 2/3 of the essay focusing on how that person shaped youâ€"specifically. Each essay should focus on different qualities and events, and should help you become 3-D for the admissions officers.

Marilyn Monroe Sings Happy Birthday to JFK

On May 19, 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe sang â€Å"Happy Birthday† to U.S. President John F. Kennedy during an event celebrating JFK’s 45th birthday at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. Monroe, wearing a skin-tight dress covered in rhinestones, sang the ordinary birthday song in such a sultry, provocative manner that it made headlines and became an iconic moment of the 20th century. Marilyn Monroe Is â€Å"Late† Marilyn Monroe had been working on the movie Something’s Got to Give in Hollywood when she took a plane to New York to participate in President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Things had not been going well on the set, mostly because Monroe had been frequently absent. Despite her recent illnesses and trouble with alcohol, Monroe was determined to make a grand performance for JFK. The birthday event was a Democratic Party fundraiser and included many famous names of the time, including Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Benny, and Peggy Lee. Rat Pack member (and JFK’s brother in law) Peter Lawford was the master of ceremonies and he made Monroe’s famous lateness a running joke throughout the event. Several times, Lawford would introduce Monroe and the spotlight would search the back of the stage for her, but Monroe would not step out. This had been planned, for Monroe was to be the finale. Finally, the end of the show was near and still, Lawford was making jokes about Monroe not appearing on time. Lawford stated, â€Å"On the occasion of your birthday, the lovely lady who is not only pulchritudinous [breathtakingly beautiful] but punctual. Mr. President, Marilyn Monroe!† Still no Monroe. Lawford pretended to stall, continuing, â€Å"Ahem. A woman about whom, it truly may be said, she needs no introduction. Let me just say†¦here she is!† Again, no Monroe. This time, Lawford offered what seemed to be an impromptu introduction, â€Å"But I’ll give her an introduction anyway. Mr. President, because in the history of show business, perhaps there has been no one female who has meant so much, who has done more†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Mid-introduction, the spotlight had found Monroe at the back of the stage, walking up some steps. The audience cheered and Lawford turned around. In her skin-tight dress, it was hard for Monroe to walk, so she scampered across the stage on her tiptoes. When she reaches the podium, she rearranges her white mink jacket, pulling it close to her chest. Lawford put his arm around her and offered one last joke, â€Å"Mr. President, the late Marilyn Monroe.† Monroe Sings â€Å"Happy Birthday† Before exiting the stage, Lawford helped Monroe remove her jacket and the audience was given their first full glimpse of Monroe in her nude-colored, skin-tight, sparkly dress. The huge crowd, stunned but excited, cheered loudly. Monroe waited for the cheering to die down, then placed one hand on the microphone stand and started singing. Happy birthday to youHappy birthday to youHappy birthday, Mr. PresidentHappy birthday to you By all accounts, the usually somewhat boring â€Å"Happy Birthday† song had been sung in a very provocative way. The whole rendition seemed even more intimate because there had been rumors that Monroe and JFK had been having an affair. Plus the fact that Jackie Kennedy was not present at the event made the song seem even more suggestive. Then She Sang Another Song What many people don’t realize is that Monroe then continued with another song. She sang, Thanks, Mr. PresidentFor all the things you’ve done,The battles that you’ve wonThe way you deal with U.S. SteelAnd our problems by the tonWe thank you so much Then she threw her arms open and yelled, â€Å"Everybody! Happy birthday!† Monroe then jumped up and down, the orchestra began playing the â€Å"Happy Birthday† song, and a huge, lighted cake was brought out from the back, carried on poles by two men. President Kennedy then came up onto the stage and stood behind the podium. He waited for the massive cheering to die down and then began his remarks with, â€Å"I can now retire from politics after having had ‘Happy Birthday’ sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way.† (Watch the full video on YouTube.) The whole event had been memorable and proved to be one of the last public appearances of Marilyn Monroe – she died of an apparent overdose less than three months later. The movie she had been working on would never be finished. JFK would be shot and killed 18 months later. The Dress Marilyn Monroe’s dress that night has become nearly as famous as her rendition of â€Å"Happy Birthday.† Monroe had wanted a very special dress for this occasion and so had asked one of the finest costume designers of Hollywood, Jean Louis, to make her a dress. Louis designed something so glamorous and so suggestive that people are still talking about it. Costing $12,000, the dress was made of a thin, flesh-colored souffle gauze and covered in 2,500 rhinestones. The dress was so tight that it had to be literally sewn onto Monroe’s naked body. In 1999, this iconic dress went up for auction and sold for a shocking $1.26 million. As of this writing (2015), it remains the most expensive piece of clothing ever sold at auction.

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights - 875 Words

I feel that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) does have a western bias. Many people look to US for guidance, but not many other nations copy our way of life. States can sign treaties, but they cannot be reassured that the other nation will keep its word. The US and the UN should maybe not be engaging in promoting western society, but they should be engaging in promoting the protection of human rights. The UN UDHR fought for minimal rights in 1948 by identifying three types of generations of rights. The first was political participation and civil liberties inspired by the Enlightenment. For example, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and the rights written in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. The second was social and economic rights of state commitments motivated by social dislocation of the Industrial Revolution. This can be found in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution as well, along with all the articles of what stat es can and cannot do. The third and final was the protection of community identity and national solidarity. These rights can be found in the Bill of Rights, which protects the rights of citizens. All of the above rights are protected by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which reflects western interests, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), which is supported in communist and other developing countries. Matthew Henson Example For Students

Matthew Henson â€Å"As I stood there on the top of the world and I thought of the hundreds of men who had lost their lives in their effort to reach it , I felt profoundly grateful that I had the honor of representing my race. † With these words, Matthew Henson planted the American flag on the North Pole. During the past, black Americans have not received the acknowledgement they deserved. Such was the case of Matthew A. Henson. He was the first person to discover the North Pole, although Robert Peary is usually credited with this feat. Henson passed away in relative obscurity, in 1955, and was not given ecognition until 1988, when he was reburied in Arlington National Cemetery with Matthew Henson was born on August 3, 1866 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was raised in Carrol County. At an early age, Henson’s mother died, leaving him alone to live with his father. Unfortunately the family experienced problems with the Klu Klux Klan. To escape the problems and make a better life for his son, Henson’s father moved the family to Washington, D. C.. While Henson’s father worked, he took care of the elderly uncle they lived with. While still living in Washington Henson’s father died, leaving him in care of his uncle. The uncle was mean and abusive to the point that it caused him to runaway from the only home he had. For awhile, Henson wandered the streets. He was a poor, ragged, and uneducated kid. What could he offer to someone to earn a living? Finally, he came to a small restaurant. The owner hired Henson to sweep and mop the floors, clean the kitchen and wash the dishes. Henson had no place to stay so they owner let him sleep on the floor of the restaurant after closing. One day, Henson saw a sign advertising a ship captain looking for young men to work on his ship. Since he had nothing better to do, Henson decided o sign up. That was the beginning of Henson’s sailing career. For the rest of Henson’s teenage years, Henson sailed around the world. He learned much aboard the ship such as: mathematics, navigation, the operations of a ship, and how to read books and maps. By the age of 21, Henson was a skilled and experienced sailor. Between his terms at sea, Henson would sometimes work to earn a little money. One job he had would change the course of his life. While a store clerk in Washington, D. C. , he met Robert Peary and was hired as his valet for a trip to survey canal sites in Nicaragua in 1887-88. Beginning in the year 1891, he accompanied Peary on many expeditions to the Arctic. The kinship that Henson had established with the Eskimos and his resourcefulness with handling equipment made him indispensable to Peary in polar explorations. On April 6, 1909, six men made a frenzied dash for the North Pole. They were (in order from first to last) Matthew Henson, followed by four Eskimos pulling Robert Peary on a sled (his feet were frostbitten). Henson outran them all, becoming the first man to reach the North Pole. Peary handed him the American flag, which he planted at the site in the snow. He then posed for a picture with the four Eskimo guides who led Henson and Peary to Matthew Henson’s contribution to humanity was this polar excursion. This paved the way for other extensive journeys to the Pole and similar places. If Henson and Peary had not made this journey others might not have been motivated to explore new and different places, which is why this is still relevant today. This also gave meaning to racial equality. Henson proved that even though he was black he could do anything he put his mind to. There were many other momentous happenings also going on at this time. National Conference on the Negro convened May 30, leading to founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The NAACP is organized at New York following a January meeting in the apartment of W. E. Walling with social worker Mary W. Ovington and immigrant leader Henry Moscowitz who begin â€Å"a revival of the Abolitionist spirit. † Constantinople recognizes Austrian annexation of Bosnia and Herzogovina January 12, Vienna pays the Turks a 2. 2 million indemnity, the Russians cancel a 20-million Turkish indemnity in return for Constantinople’s recognition of Bulgarian independence, and nt ernal strife disrupts the Ottoman Empire. Their claim to be the first to reach the North Pole was disputed by some and believed by others. Another explorer even claimed to have reached the Pole first. Their claim was finally proven to be true but, not without consequence. Matthew Henson was shoved out of the limelight. Peary, his fellow explorer and â€Å"friend,† claimed that he was the first in the world to reach the North Pole even though it was not true. Henson, the foremost man to reach the North Pole was reduced to carrying luggage and parking cars for a living. Years after that famous sojourn, Henson was accepted as a member of the Explorer’s Club. The club gave Henson his overdue, but well deserved recognition. The club worked to get Henson accredited as the true discoverer of the North Pole. Their efforts were partially paid off in 1954. In 1954, the year before Henson died, President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented him with an award acknowledging his great accomplishment. It was not until 1982 that Henson was reburied in Arlington National Cemetery, where he should have been

Bahram Sadeghi Defines Literature Essays - Sadeghi, Free Essays

Bahram Sadeghi Defines Literature Essays - Sadeghi, Free Essays Bahram Sadeghi Defines Literature Understanding Literature Dr. Nojoumian January 20, 2014 Bahram Sadeghi Defines Literature Malakut, a novelette and The Trench and the Empty Canteens, a collection of short stories added to the galaxy of Persian literature a new star; a very big and special star named Bahram Sadeghi. His style was not like anybody else before him in the Persian literatures history of storytelling (Taghizade qtd. In Aslani 83) and could not be imitated by anybody after him (Saedi, Bahram Sadeghis Art of Storytelling). He also had published some poems under the pseudonym Sahba Meghdari_ an anagram of his name Bahram Sadeghi_ but giving up soon for storytelling. Exploring Sadeghis view toward literature is worthwhile because of the great influence he had on the later generations of Persian short story writers, Houshang Golshiri among the most notable ones (Golshiri). Mr. Writer has just started to write, one of the short stories in the collection The Trench and the Empty Canteens, is itself the story of the production of a literary work which can gives us some clue for further research about how Sadeghi defined literature. In the story of Mr. Writer has just started to write, Mr. Writers story Mr. Asbaghi will come back is being analyzed by a strict critic who has complaints from the beginning of the story to its end (Sadeghi 148). The story begins in the middle of the action. The narrator who is the conductor of the meeting starts the story by claiming that Mr. Writer has just started to write, is a nave writer; he believes that the writer shows a lack of taste in naming the story Mr. Asbaghi will come back. Problem: Import-Export Imbalance Introduction:Among the many economic problems faced by the Philippines, the imbalance of imports and exports creates a toll on our development with foreign countries. The negative trade is heavy and only counterbalanced by the service account surplus. Over the last two decades, Philippine exports have shifted from commodity-based products to manufactured goods. However, in the midst of the current global economic recession, the exports of electronics, garments and textiles have yet to reach a level of import neutralization. Economic Anal ysis: Our country produces a variety of different products. But Filipinos don’t give as much patronage to local products as compared to imported goods. If asked, most of our countrymen would prefer purchasing goods from other countries, over products that are domestically grown and produced. Most countries attempt to achieve a trade balance, in which the flow of imports and exports is relatively equal. If a country exports too much, it may not be able to support its domestic needs, while a country which imports excessive amounts of products may not have enough money to support the high volume of imports. In a country with a trade balance, import and export rates are about equal, with nations exporting excess items for sale, and importing the goods that it needs. Historically, the Philippines has been an important centre for commerce for centuries for its ethnic minority, namely, the Chinese who were also its first occupants. The archipelago has also been visited by Arabs and In dians for the purpose of trading in the first and early second millennium. As of 21st century, the country is member in several international trade organizations including the APEC, ASEAN and WTO.Since 1980s, the Philippines have opened their economy to foreign markets, and established a network of free trade agreements with several countries. The United States is one of the Philippines top trading partners. In 2010, according to US Department of Commerce dad, trade between the Philippines and US amounts to US$15. 4 billion. US is also the Philippines largest foreign investor, with foreign direct investment close to US$6 billion at the end of 2009. Under the new Aquino administration, the government plans to open up the country to more foreign investment in industries such as business processing operations, mining and tourism. However, this move may be hindered by restrictions such a prohibition of foreign ownership of land and public utilities. Philippines Import and Export Indicato rs and Statistics at a Glance (2010) Total value of exports:  US$50. 72 billion Primary exports commodities: semiconductors and electronic products, transport equipment, garments, copper products, petroleum products, coconut oil, fruits Primary exports partners:  US (17. 6 percent of total exports), Japan (16. 2 percent), Netherlands (9. 8 percent), Hong Kong (8. 6 percent), China (7. 7 percent), Germany (6. percent), Singapore (6. 2 percent), South Korea (4. 8 percent) Total value of imports:  US$59. 9 billion Primary imports commodities:  electronic products, mineral fuels, machinery and transport equipment, iron and steel, textile fabrics, grains, chemicals, plastic Primary imports partners:  Japan (12. 5 percent of total imports), US (12 percent), China (8. 8 percent), Singapore (8. 7 percent), South Korea (7. 9 percent), Taiwan (7. 1 percent), Thailand (5. 7 percent) Although there are many variances that cause the imbalances, the following are some specific reasons .Convergent or divergent dynamics of imports and exports are the first causes of trade balance changes. Everything that impacts asymmetrically on imports and exports can impact the trade balance. In particular, price and non-price competitiveness is relevant. If external pressure forces down the prices at which a country sells its exports, then a trade deficit is more likely (terms of trade effect). In other words, in a hierarchical world, trade balance can reflect political balance of power.A faster GDP growth than trade partners ones usually results in trade deficit, since imports are elastic to GDP (they raise more than proportionally). Currency exchange rate can be very important: possibly due to a fixed exchange rate and a higher inflation rate than commercial partners, an overvaluation of the domestic currency can lead to deep trade deficits on most products and with most countries. A sharp devaluation can dramatically improve all these relationships Our country is producing a lot of different product. But we rarely notice it, we Filipinos patronized the product of our neighboring country because now in our day using foreign and branded products will make you look â€Å"cool† while using Philippine products will make you look cheap, without knowing that some of Philippine product was bought by other countries and they just use their brand name in our products. I think that our government should follow what the Chinese did before, they control the importing of foreign products and let make their people buy their own products. Now as we see the China was one of the richest countries in the world.I think that if we do the same there is a great chance that our country will one day became one of the richest countries in the world. II. Problem: Low Market Development Introduction: Marketing has always been prevalent in creating various impacts on a nations growing economy. Economics is strongly involved with the booming industries through the use of busi ness strategies. Product innovation is also an important factor in the economic development of any country. It is primarily vested on the ability of the constituents to formulate ideas beneficial to both the masses and the countrys financial status. The Philippines, known as a financially democratic country, has an economy that is marked as the 40th largest in the entire world as stated by the 2012 International Monetary Fund statistics. It is also one of the emerging markets in the world as a heavily industrialized country, it has been transitioning from being centered on the agricultural sector to service providing and then to manufacturing various products. According to the CIA Fact book, the estimated 2012 GDP (purchasing power parity) of the Philippines was 424. 355 billion in estimation.Goldman Sachs, an American multinational financing bank, estimates that by the year 2050, the Philippines will be the 14th largest economy in the world. Goldman Sachs also included the Philippi nes in its list of the Next Eleven economies. According to HSBC, another well-known and influential financial institution, the Philippine economy will become the 16th largest economy in the world, 5th largest economy in Asia and the largest economy in the Southeast Asian region by 2050. These predictions speak highly about the Philippines improvement in the business sector which will probably lift the country out of the 3rd world nation stigma. In order to make the possible improvements, it is suggested that the Philippines must focus more on exportation of goods and services such as: electronic products, semiconductors, transport equipment, garments, copper products, petroleum products, coconut oil, and fruits. With the help of foreign countries charting throughout the globe, the plan on investing more on exportation may be a plausible stepping stone in the transformation of the once forlorn economy to a thriving economy that is at par with first world economies like that of Japan, Singapore and the like.Market development pays a huge page in promoting innovation within the business sectors. This would entail the expanding of potentials markets through new users and new uses. The strategy would have to be remodeled with the use of new geographic segments, new demographic segments, new institutional segments and new psychographic segments in order to reach out to important factors in the market. Economic Analysis/Conclusion: The year 2012 has been a magical year for the Philippines real state industry.Stbale economic growth, low interest rates, and increasing home investment of overseas Filipino workers drove the steady demand in the local property market. Add in the continuous growth of foreign investment, expansion of the off-shoringand outsourcing industries, and the influx of expatriate workers. All these factors have combined to the shape the property boom that is changing the skyline not only of the metropolitan region but of the provincial cities as we ll. The Philippines has the fastest growing economy among Asian countries for the first quarter of 2013 according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).Our beloved country is also considered as the 40th largest economy and one of the emerging markets in the world. Philippines is considered as a newly industrialized country. It has been transitioning from agriculture to services and manufacturing. It is said that the quarterly growth rate was the highest record since reformist President Benigno Aquino III took office in 2010 on a promise to fight corruption and cut poverty. The Philippines is on the verge of regaining decades lost to slow growth, thanks to government efforts to instill confidence that have kept the country on the investors’ radar even amid financial volatility. The restoration of macroeconomic balance has helped insulate domestic conditions from recurring global financial turmoil and volatile capital flows,† the Institute of International Finance (IIF) said in report dated Aug. 14. â€Å"The key issue for the near-term outlook is maintaining macroeconomic stability. The strong growth at the turn of the year was not a transitory phenomenon, but evidence that the economy was regaining momentum,† it added. IIF- a group of global financial institutions- noted the economy could surprise with a 7. -percent growth this year, faster than last year’s 6. 8 percent, following the first-quarter uptick of 7. 8 percent. Part of the reason for the sterling performance, the group said, was the Philippines’ â€Å"rising global prominence† hinged on the Aquino administration’s budget discipline and improving public governance. In the SONA last month, Mr. Aquino outlined several economic reforms such as the rationalization of fiscal incentives and the relaxation of the â€Å"cabotage† law, which currently restricts foreigners from plying interisland shipping routes in the country. These plann ed reforms, as well as the crackdown on smuggling that was also highlighted in the President’s speech before Congress, were welcomed by foreign investors as signs of the administration’s seriousness to further strengthen the country’s economic base. Registered investments for the month reached $2. 5 billion. The bulk of these funds went to publicly listed shares, while the remaining went to peso time deposits and government securities. The registered investments for the month were 11. 3 percent lower than June’s figure, but this was mainly due to the one-time block sale of shares in publicly listed Cosco Capital Inc. the BSP said. Based on the research conducted, the country must appoint credible and competent managerial heads in order to reach its optimal goal in progressing market structures. A marketing manager has to consider certain questions before implementing a market development strategy. For example: 1. Are they profitable? Profitability is an i mportant factor in implementing ideas within a market-centered civilization. Other questions regarding the development of the market would include the following: 2. Will it require the introduction of new or modified products? And, 3. Are the customer and channel well enough researched and understood? The marketing manager uses four groups to focus the market segment decision: existing customers, competitor customers, non-buying in current segments and, new segments. III. Problem: Unemployment Introduction: Unemployment occurs when people are without work and actively seeking work. The unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force. The Philippines remains one of the most resilient economies in Southeast Asia, but such growth is neither sustainable nor inclusive as joblessness remains a problem for most Filipinos. Philippines jobless r ate increased to 7. 5 percent in April from 7. 1 percent reported in January and 6. 9 percent in April of 2012. The unemployment rate was pushed up by job losses in the agricultural sector due to extreme weather conditions. The employment rate reached 92. 5 percent, down from 93. 1 percent a year ago, due to a drop in the number of agricultural workers.Laborers and unskilled workers comprised the biggest group making up one-third (32. 6 percent) of the total employed persons; 57. 5 percent of the total employed population were wage and salary workers and 63. 5 percent were working full time. There were more males (61. 4 percent) than females (38. 6 percent) among the unemployed. The age group 15-24 made up 48. 2 percent of the total unemployed, while the age group 25-34, 30. 9 percent. By education, about one-fifth (21. 3 percent) of the unemployed were college graduates, 14. percent were college undergraduates, and 31. 7 percent were high school graduates. In the latest Asian Devel opment Outlook 2013 released, the Manila-based lender forecasts Philippine gross domestic product to expand 6 percent this year and in 2014. According to ADO 2013, persistently high levels of unemployment and underemployment remain a key concern in the country. As the latest data from the National Statistics Office has shown, about 7 percent of the 40 million labor forces are unemployed, while about 20 percent are underemployed. The Philippines has a strong growth in its hand and the next step for the Philippine government is to translate this strong growth into more jobs that will benefit most Filipinos. President  Benigno Aquino  has promised to cut unemployment to 6 percent at most by the end of his term in 2016. Proposals include easing curbs on foreign investment, boosting tourism and infrastructure to provide more work outside the capital, and expanding farming and fishing, said Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, who’s in charge of the plan. The low invest ment share is because past economic growth has depended more on services that are less capital intensive than industry. We have to provide something like a million new jobs; we do have a significant increase in population. † Almost  half of all jobless  Filipinos are between the ages of 15 and 24, according to the government statistics office. The biggest area of employment remains  agriculture and fishing, which provides work for 30. 4 million people, or almost a third of the population. About 8 percent work in manufacturing.Call center agents are the most in demand, followed by salespeople and service crew, according to  Phil-JobNet, the government’s official job portal. The site has 14,165 vacancies in so-called business process outsourcing. With limited opportunities at home, many jobseekers go abroad to find work. The number of overseas Filipino workers climbed 15 percent in 2011 to almost 1. 7 million, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration said . The funds they sent home totaled  $21. 4 billion  last year, about 10 percent of gross domestic product. Economic Analysis/Conclusion:One of the reasons why people nowadays are jobless is because people are lazy. The global crisis does take effect on this issue; so does one’s stature in life, but being predominantly sluggish is also a factor in unemployment. One’s financial status can also be a factor, in a sense that without proper and complete education, one’s chances of being hired is gradually slimmed down. Here are points on why a lot of people remain jobless amidst modern globalization efforts: 1. Low self-esteem due to lack of financial aid, 2. The Global Crisis which deeply affects the nation’s economic progress, 3.Educational attainment does not go pass collegiate level due to lack of financial resources. As the days go by, developers take more technological advances in creating more job opportunities for the masses. One example would have to be the efforts done by local institutions such as TESDA – which aims to provide vocational courses and setting lower costs so education can be better attained. This is where the blue collar jobs come in. more and more people are being open to blue collar jobs than white collar jobs due to its attainability to the masses.Even non-collegiate graduates may belonged to the blue collared sector. One of the factors we take much pride in is our bountiful number of English proficient workers in all different kinds of fields of expertise. This is possibly why our industry has reached so much success in business process outsourcing sectors such as call centers. But given those facts, why do we still see an evident gap in the job sector in the Philippines? Around 2. 8 million people are jobless today. According to the World Bank around 10 million people nationwide are unemployed and underemployed.Based on a million Filipinos added to labor force annually in the Philippines, our gover nment can create 14. 6 million jobs until 2016. Half a million Filipinos graduate college every year, yet a lot of companies still have difficulty looking for credible workers. This is because the courses chosen by the graduates are usually not in-sync with the job description needed for employment. Courses/programs being taken up in school are essential since they give an edge of expertise for someone in the labor force over those whose course may be considered far-fetched.Colleges and universities across the nation are now taking action to revise and update their course offerings that would jive well with the ever-changing trends of the industry and business sector. CHED encourages schools to open new courses leaning towards business, medicine, education, hotel and restaurant management, information technology and, computer courses. It is believed that through this, students will be more mindful and rightfully guided to take courses that are in demand. IV. Recommendation: * We the refore recommend that Filipinos should support, patronize and buy locally made products. This can help shape the economy and aid in its growth and development. Not only can it help support the money flow and ease financial burdens, it can also be a factor in promoting nationalism amongst countrymen. * We therefore recommend that the government must create steps in further developing and supporting every sector in the economy. For instance, the government should regulate and implement more rigid rules in the overall control of the importation of foreign products. * We therefore recommend that Filipinos be aware of information about the economy and the various ways to help support, preserve and flourish it.
